It’s an all-too-familiar situation for many.

You wake up at the crack of dawn to get to the airport for the recommended three hours before your flight, only to read the dreaded ‘delayed’ message on the departure board.

Even pro travellers aren’t exempt from this and have found themselves in situations where they have more time to kill at the airport than they initially planned.

Travel editor Peter Greenberg shared with readers of his website that six of the last eight flights he took were delayed.

He added that while the other two flights landed on time, he then waited 40 minutes for a gate.

To help other travellers facing delays, he offered some tips to make the wait as bearable as possible.

His first piece of advice is to have a fully charged mobile phone and to bring an extra charged battery.

Most airlines allow battery packs in hand luggage but not in checked luggage.

However, it’s important to check with your airline as some, including Emirates and Singapore Airlines, have further restrictions.

The travel expert also recommends that passengers should carry extra fruit, such as an apple, a pear or a banana, to stay hydrated and avoid unhealthy snacks during delays.

Finally, Mr Greenberg advises always packing a change of clothes in your carry-on bag.

This means that you have the option to freshen up if the delay is very long.

If you’re checking bags, he advises splitting your clothing between both bags, so that if one is lost, you still have something to wear.

It comes as the consumer group Which? recently reported that flight delays are getting worse.
