France is a popular travel destination for Brits, not least because it’s the home of delicious croissants and good wine.

From the iconic sights of Paris to the charm of the French Riviera, every corner of the country draws in tourists to see what it has to offer.

There are ways to make your next holiday across the Channel even better, though – if you abide by certain social ‘rules’.

A France expert, who’s lived in Paris for more than 10 years, has shared her best advice for travellers exploring the region.

Her top tip?

Skip the designer clothes, bags and logos.

Lane Nieset wrote in Travel + Leisure that the best way to avoid pickpockets is to skip flashy accessories, as they can make you a target.

French women are known for their effortless look, from simple trench coats and tailoring to low-key luxury goods, rather than loud designs and brand names plastered everywhere.

Indeed, cities such as Paris can be havens for pickpockets.

France is the second most visited country by Brits andis also ranked second in the European Pickpocketing Index, with many incidents recorded each year.

The Eiffel Tower, for example, is a particular hotspot.

Often, one member of a pickpocketing group will approach a tourist with a seemingly innocent request, such as asking for directions.

They may also bump into travellers, possibly spilling their food or drink all over them.

Then, while they are distracted, an accomplice will reach into their pocket or bag and take off with their money, credit cards, and identification.

Pickpockets also operate in busy, tourist-filled areas, such as Montmartre, the Champs-Elysees, and Gare du Nord train station.

It’s also worth being particularly careful at night.

There are other tips to make sure you stay safe in France.

Firstly, try to carry a purse or bag that can zip shut, and one that can be kept in sight at all times such as a bumbag.

You could also purchase a money belt or anti-theft bag to stay safe.

And make sure you remain aware of your belongings in busy areas.
