A popular winter sun destination has reversed its afternoon booze ban less than a week since the rules were introduced.
Just last week, it was announced that Thailand’s existing rules surrounding alcohol would be more strictly enforced.
Under the new restrictions, which came into effect from Saturday, November 8, alcohol consumption or purchases between 2pm and 5pm and from midnight to 11am were completely banned.
Until recently only sellers faced fines of up to 10,000 Thai baht (£234), but it was then tightened to also apply to drinkers.
At the time, Tourism Authority of Thailand warned: ‘Violations may lead to fines or other legal consequences under transport and alcohol control laws.
‘Tourists are reminded that outside of the listed exceptions, drinking or purchasing alcohol during restricted hours or in prohibited areas remains illegal.
‘Businesses in violation may be fined or shut down, and individuals could face legal consequences.’
But now, Thai authorities have gone back on the new regulations and instead introduced a six-month pilot programme, The Straits Times reports.

From early December, the sale of alcoholic beverages will be permitted between 2pm and 5pm.
Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat announced the trial, which could be extended even further, yesterday (November 13) after backlash from business owners and those in the tourist industry.
It comes just in time for peak tourist season in Thailand, with millions flocking to the popular winter sun destination between November and February.
Tourists visiting Thailand had to get to grips with new entry rules earlier this year.
Under the new regulations, which came into place on May 1, tourists have to complete a digital arrival card online before arriving in Thailand.
The FCDO updated its advice to warn British tourists that they need to complete the card.
It said: ‘From 1 May 2025, all foreign nationals entering Thailand, whether by air, land or sea must complete a digital arrival card online before arrival.
‘Travellers can register for an arrival card within three days before they arrive.’

The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) has replaced the paper arrival cards which used to be filled out by travellers.
Tourists will need to provide their personal information on the TDAC as well as details about their length of stay and accommodation.
The change comes as tourism is expected to surge in Thailand after it featured in the latest series of HBO’s White Lotus.
