Inside a cruise ship morgue – as passengers find out what ‘free ice cream parties’ really mean

by admin

Sadly, when hundreds of people set sail to travel to several destinations over a few weeks, deaths can happen.

Although the incidents are rare, cruise ships have to be prepared for if a passenger does pass away on board.

Cruise paramedic Rory, known as @roryatsea on social media, revealed what a morgue looks like on a ship.

In the video, he described deaths on board as ‘incredibly rare’ and went on to show where the morgue is located on the ship he’s based on.

The camera showed a corridor near the vessel’s medical centre lined with several doors.

‘Prior to the morgue, the body is cleaned, changed, all ID tags are placed on and then you’re moved to here, the morgue,’ Rory explains.

He zooms into a small sign above the white, metal door that reads ‘morgue’.

‘As far as I’m aware some medical centres have their morgues built in but ours is just external to the centre here,’ he adds.

The paramedic then ventures inside the morgue and shows a large metal machine with three doors.

On Rory’s ship, the morgue has capacity for three deceased people.

‘The slab slides out and we can transfer the deceased onto there where the freezer is then activated,’ he says.

The camera shows a black bed being pulled out of the morgue.

singer who used to work on a cruise ship previously lifted the lid on the morbid reason why there are sometimes ‘free ice cream parties’ on board.

Dara Starr Tucker opened up about her experience with cruise ship disasters and deaths in a series of videos on TikTok.

When a commenter noted there is a correlation between the amount of ice cream given to passengers and the number of bodies in the morgue, she confirmed that ‘this is unfortunately often true’.

‘If the crew suddenly makes a bunch of ice cream available to the passengers — free ice cream party — it’s often because more people have died on the ship than they have room for in the morgue,’ she said.

'Prior to the morgue, the body is cleaned, changed, all ID tags are placed on and then you're moved to here, the morgue,' Rory explains

Tucker explained that she was a singer on a cruise ship about 10 years ago and spent six months on the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

‘Thankfully, we didn’t have to deal with this kind of stuff, but we were friends with some crew members who did,’ she said.

The social commentator estimated that there were 25,000 to 30,000 passengers on each cruise and about four to ten people died every voyage.

‘There are a lot of older people on ships and often people die on cruises,’ she noted. ‘So the morgue, I believe they said they held about seven people.’
