How to visit the UK’s ‘oldest theme park’ that’s been open since 1843 – with 40-acres of gardens, a maze and thrilling rides

The UK’s ‘oldest theme’ park has been open since 1843 and is still packed with rides and attractions for guests to enjoy.

Located on the Isle of Wight, Blackgang Chine first launched over 180 years ago and has been providing great family days out since.

The theme park boasts attractions for all ages and promises ‘stunning views’ of the island from the rides.

For the thrill seekers, Extinction is a swing that flies 360 degrees at 18-metre heights.

The ride only opened in 2023, and features views over the cliff edge, while new beach and pirate-themed rides opened in 2024 too.

Evolution is another daring venture that plummets 400 metres high above the Jurassic Coast.

The hedge maze is a calmer option and visitors can enjoy sea views while they figure their way out of the twisting 5,000 privet bushes.

It’s situated on the grounds of what used to be Blackgang Hotel’s putting green and was created in 1963.

The park is known as the Land of Imagination due to its focus on real-life fun and a lack of technology.

Other attractions include Cowboy Town, Underwater Kingdom, Fairyland and Nursery Land.

Dogs are welcome in the theme park and it prides itself on offering ‘multi-generational fun’.

Other rides include the Jolly Robin which is a ghostly ship that swings backwards and forwards.

Shipwrecked is another pirate-themed attraction and the website’s description reads, ‘swing, spin and scream your way through a family-friendly high-seas adventure’.

The park has 40 acres of garden space, according to The Mirror and the rides are spread across the resort.

Theme park enthusiasts wanting to visit Blackgang Chine may have to wait, it is currently closed for the winter season and is yet to release its opening dates for 2026.

It’s possible to access the Isle of Wight by a ferry from Portsmouth Harbour station and the ride takes around 90 minutes.

Recently, the best theme park in the UK was revealed to be Paultons Park, in Hampshire.

It’s a family favourite – because it’s home to Peppa Pig World – and won the top spot in the UK Theme Park Awards 2025.

Paultons Park, which sits on 65 acres on the New Forest’s edge in Hampshire, is also home to Ghostly Manor – a £3.5 million ghoulish interactive gameplay ride.

As such, the theme park is popular with families, especially those with young children.
