London’s Regent Street to go car-free for one day only – and host a magical Christmas party

by admin

One of London’s most famous shopping streets has announced it will ban traffic for a whole day next month – to host a Christmas celebration.

On December 6th, Regent Street will be fully pedestrianised to make way for a festive shopping paradise with entertainment, refreshments and plenty of photo opportunities.

The historic street in the heart of the capital’s West End is home to flagship stores like Hamleys and Liberty London.

The road will be closed to traffic between Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus, with celebrations starting at 2pm and continuing through to 9pm.

Three vintage red London buses will be parked along Regent Street’s Festive Mile during the party – each offering seasonal experiences for revellers.

Visitors can also enjoy roving entertainment such as stilt walkers, juggling jesters, funny festive butlers and toy store Hamleys’ elves.

The Choose Love Shop is also set to return to Regent Street for a second year, as ‘The Ultimate Charity Shop’ pops up as part of the charity’s 10th birthday.

The store will stock essential supplies and life-saving interventions for refugees alongside Choose Love merchandise and luxury fashion and beauty donated by leading brands and designers sold at huge discounts.

Free gift wrapping will also be available in-store on December 11, 14 and 20 with shoppers once again able to bring items purchased from across Regent Street or St James to be wrapped with the Regent Street x Choose Love paper – all that’s needed is a valid receipt to claim the service.

Traffic has been increasingly outlawed in recent years in the West End’s busiest shopping and theatre district.

Sadiq Khan recently announced he’s accelerating his plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street and may get rid of cars ‘as soon as next year’.

The Mayor of London is pushing to fast-track proposals to remove traffic the areas busiest shopping street ahead of local elections, amid fears a future administration could scrap the project.

Last year, the government gave the Labour Mayor new powers to push through with the £150million scheme, which the former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner claimed would give the popular shopping district ‘the boost it needs’.

City Hall aims to reroute vehicles and begin the first phase of pedestrianisation by spring 2026, subject to consultation.
