Cruise expert reveals why you might get the worst cabin on board – and how to avoid it

by admin

Making sure you have a cabin that suits your needs and is pleasant to be in is an important part of your cruising experience.

It is surprisingly easy to end up with the worst cabin on the ship, but it is also avoidable.

Cruise expert Gary Bembridge explained on his blog, Tips For Travellers, how passengers can be given a poor room.

When booking a cruise, some companies automatically opt for ‘auto-upgrades’.

Although this sounds good, it can mean passengers are moved to a different room that might be deemed ‘better’ but turns out to not be to their taste, Gary explained.

Paying a ‘guaranteed’ fare can also land you with a less desirable cabin.

This refers to when passengers might select a specific grade but leave it down to the cruise company to allocate the room.

It might seem easier, but this can mean you’re given whatever is left after everyone else has chosen.

In some cases, it might work out favourably and you could end up with a better room, but you could also be landed with the worst cabin.

Gary explained how it is sometimes better to pay to select a cabin that you want to avoid being disappointed, and it doesn’t always work out to be much more expensive.

He revealed other ways to dodge the bad cabins on a ship, and advised to choose a room surrounded by other cabins.

In fact, it’s one of Gary’s ‘golden rules’ and he emphasises being surrounded ‘above, below and beside’.

He explained how this cabin position can help to ‘buffer’ any noise from other aspects of the ship like busy service areas.

Other noisy spots on the ship that are good to avoid booking nearby include close to the laundry room, entertainment areas and the bar.

For those who suffer from sea sickness, the middle of the ship is the best spot for you, according to Gary.

Cabins at the front and back of the liner are more prone to feel the brunt of rocky seas.

Aside from making mistakes with your cabin choices, there are other missteps cruisers can make during the trip, according to etiquette experts.

Being disruptive is a major no-no on a cruise and causing havoc to other people’s trips isn’t a good move.

There are plenty of communal spaces on a ship, and passengers are urged to be considerate when using them. Shouting, talking loudly and being a pain to others is thought to be rude.

Bethany Skorik, founder of Ascent Etiquette and Communications, told Business Insider how cruisers should be respectful.
