Beautiful town with UK’s best fish and chips shop has ‘spectacular’ beach walks | UK | Travel

Earlier this year, Fry Magazine listed the best fish and chip takeaways and restaurants across the UK, and one of them just so happens to belong to the most picturesque town by the coast. This glorious seaside town in Norfolk draws in Brits keen to catch some sunshine in those summer months, thanks to its sweeping sandy beaches and colourful beach huts.

Although, Wells-next-the-Sea continues to offer a sense of calm and tranquillity all year round for those needing a sweet escape by the sea. Named amongst its top list is the ever-popular French’s Fish Shop, which has been serving the area since 1921. It was only the spots that scored 96% and above by judges that were successful enough to make the list, and this little gem was one of them.

It helps that the chippy boasts spectacular views of the rolling waves along the Norfolk coastline, perfect for looking out at as you eat away. One recent visitor on TripAdvisor claimed the food was, in their opinion, “one of the best fish and chips in North Norfolk”.

One impressed customer wrote: “What can you say that hasn’t already been said? The best fish and chips I’ve ever had and consistently brilliant. No wonder there’s always a queue halfway round the block in peak tourist season.”

Another customer shared: “This was the best fish and chips we’d had in a long time! The batter was crispy and had a good amount of flavour, and the cod was fresh and tasty. There was a huge queue, but it moved quickly, and staff were efficiently serving customers. It was definitely worth queuing for.”

Aside from its tasty food, Wells is famous for its stunning beach, lined with a vast amount of bright and bold beach huts. Beyond the beach huts is a beautiful area of pinewoods that offers a lovely walk and spot for discovering wildlife, away from the sun, sea and sand.

Dogs are allowed on the beach at Wells all year round, although the use of barbeques, fires, or anything along the lines of stoves and sky lanterns is strictly prohibited. A recent visitor to the area shared that it has “everything you could wish for on an English beach”.

They continued to say: “A beautiful cafe and a Joules shop too. Very clean toilets. Access either over the steps or along the slope. Beautiful soft sand along the top of the beach and a spectacular row of beach huts backing into the pine forest.”

What Wells-next-the-Sea also offers for those visiting the area is a grand and vast 18th-century hall and estate, known as Holkham. It makes for a memorable day out as people explore the grounds via foot or bike and the four centuries’ worth of history hidden within its walls.

The estate hosts an exciting programme of events throughout the year, from intimate tours and school holiday activities to seasonal markets. A recent visitor shared their thoughts, writing: “Stunning property to visit – not cheap to get in but well worth it.

“Staff were very friendly and helpful. And it’s not just the hall itself; there is the walled garden (and a coffee station!), which is well worth the walk from the house. Definitely recommended.”
